On the roadmap

A news app for a city social media does not cover

Breaking alerts, a real archive and subscriber-only reporting — for local and regional journalism that national outlets ignore. On the roadmap, not built yet.

  • Push alerts planned
  • Not available today

Not available yet. News app is on the 10mins build roadmap and is not something you can launch today. Everything described below is planned, not shipped. If you need to be live this week, the apps listed at the bottom of this page are built and taking signups now.

What News app will be

Local news died on social platforms that took the distribution and left the costs, and it is coming back through direct subscription — but only where the publisher owns the reader. The planned news app is that: breaking alerts that arrive on a phone without an algorithm deciding, an archive worth subscribing for, and a reader relationship that belongs to the publication. On the roadmap, not built yet. Local and regional publishers looking for their own app rather than depending on DailyHunt, Inshorts or a social feed arrive here.

Planned: breaking alerts

A push that reaches every reader directly, rather than a post an algorithm may or may not show.

Planned: subscriber-only archive

Free headlines with the depth behind a subscription, which is the model that actually funds local reporting.

Planned: sections and beats

Readers follow the beats they care about — a ward, a court, a team — rather than one undifferentiated feed.

What you can launch instead, today

Content and subscriptions

The podcast and streaming apps ship today with paid subscription tiers, a branded viewer app and your own subscriber list — the closest working equivalent if what you sell is content behind a paywall.

If your reporting is audio or video

The podcast and streaming apps ship today with paid tiers, push notifications and your own subscriber list. Several local outlets are closer to a daily show than to a newspaper, and that is already buildable.

Selling products directly

The online store ships today with a full catalogue, checkout, GST invoices and shipping — and takes zero commission on your sales.

Questions people ask

Can I launch a news app today?

No, not a text-first news app — it is on the roadmap and not built. If your reporting is mostly audio or video, the podcast and streaming apps are live now with paid tiers and your own subscriber list.

Can I build a news app like DailyHunt or Inshorts?

No — a text-first news app is on the roadmap and not built, so there is nothing to sign up for here. It is also a different business from those two: they aggregate other publishers' reporting, whereas the planned app is for a publisher who does their own reporting and wants the reader relationship. If your reporting is mostly audio or video, the live podcast and streaming apps give you push alerts, paid tiers and your own subscriber list today.

Would readers get push alerts?

That is the core of the planned app: an alert that reaches the reader directly rather than a post that depends on an algorithm. Push is already built and working across the live 10mins apps.

When will it launch?

No committed date. The queue follows demand, which the button on this page records.

How would subscriptions work?

The same way they do on the live content apps — your own tiers at your own prices, collected through your own payment gateway, with the subscriber list belonging to your publication.

Something else can be live today

This one is still being built. Thirteen other apps on 10mins are not, and they launch in the same ten minutes.
